“The Journey” Ep 10: Situational Awareness 101 with Yousef Badou

by Myles 18 Comments

Yousef Badou

Today, we're releasing a special add-on episode to season 1 of “The Journey.”

In Episode #10, I train situational awareness expert, Yousef Badou from Emergence Disrupt.

Situational awareness is where protecting you and your loved one starts. It's a vital, ‘soft skill' that most people do not practice enough, versus ‘hard skills” like firearms training. because many people think SA is common sense or just being alert.

Proper situational awareness requires a lot more. It isn't rocket science, but there's definitely more to it than most people think.

For example, being alert is part of it, but what is one supposed to pay attention to?

Watch Special Episode #10

In Episode #10, Yousef runs me through the fundamental concepts that set up the proper foundation for more situational awareness training.

Episode #10 is great for anyone who wants to get a better understanding or proper situational awareness fundamentals.

We hope you like the episode!

An absolute must watch for parents! I enjoy all the info from intro to pistol to sa. Becoming a parent is what has driven me to train, but with a family schedule it’s hard to find time. So maybe an idea? Maybe 5 minute warmup vids for beginners. Like intro to pistol I could listen to at range while gearing up, or warmup to sa me and family could listen to while pulling into mall. As a beginner it’s hard to remember key basics for good foundation when you are limited on training time. Thank you all gentlemen for all you do and for tacticalhyve!!

Science is always the same, however threat may be different. Establish a baseline. Concepts of above the baseline and below baseline. Knowing that our brain can overlook the below baseline. Concept of #3.. Enjoyed his dry sense of humor. Human body is resilient, plenty of fight in us. Never try to explain down the, “fill in the blank.” Awareness!

SOMETIMES, THEY WANT MORE... You never know what a SOMETIMES, THEY WANT MORE...
You never know what a criminal is going to do.

This is a robbery at a jewelry store in Thailand. When it comes to property, it's generally a wise decision to give up your property rather than risk your life.

However, sometimes criminals do more than just take property. This is an unfortunate example. We just never really know what criminals plan to do.

The robber opens fire on the family at the counter for no reason, then shoots the employees. There really is nothing they could have done--they were caught off guard. It's difficult to watch and angers us, but things like this can and do happen.

Stay vigilant.

HOME INVASION This happened in Flagstaff, St. Jam HOME INVASION
This happened in Flagstaff, St. James (corrected). We do not have details other than that.

We’ve discussed the importance of being aware in transitional spaces. Let’s assume the robbery victim did glance around before entering his home and didn’t see anything alarming.

Some questions: Did he lock the door to his place? Did the robbers force themselves in even with a locked door? We aren’t sure as we don’t have the details.

When thinking about hardening one’s home against some kind of invasion like this, your door should be set up in a way to buy you some time. Yes, robbers might be able to force their way in even if the door is locked, but a reinforced door can help buy you some time to take the ‘next step’.

What is the ‘next step’? This is where having a plan for such a situation can help. If he heard robbers trying to knock down his door, perhaps part of the plan could have been to immediately run inside the house to an established choke points/safe spot where he could call 911. Maybe one’s home defense plan includes sending a guard dog down to do work, while one stays in their safe spot for the police to arrive.

There are endless options and the plan will depend on a lot of variables.

The point here is, we should be situationally aware in transitional spaces, but we should also have a plan in case someone tries to forcefully enter our homes.

AMBUSHED Here, we have security transporting cash- AMBUSHED
Here, we have security transporting cash--likely to a bank. They are ambushed with little to no time to process everything going on and react appropriately.

What do you feel could have been done differently to prevent this?

Some ideas:

1. When transporting money, depending on the rules of a particular country, security should be armed with their tools ready. Here, both security guards had their pistols holstered. We do not know where this happened, but in various parts of the world, it's not uncommon for armed security to have one or two members with rifles ready for situations like this, while other security members carry the cargo/cash.

2. Blind spots. If one's profession lends itself to attacks like this, it's a good idea to try and get a clear view of your surroundings. We can't see all the angles, but it looks like the van could have blocked the security guards' line of sight. If this is truly the case, they were behind the power curve in terms of situational awareness.

What else do you think they could have done?
