"The Journey" Episode 2: Intro to Carbine with Retired Navy SEAL Mark Cochiolo

We continue “The Journey” with retired Navy SEAL, Mark T. “Coch” Cochiolo.

If you're new to “The Journey,” it's a video series where I will be traveling across the United States to train with various subject matter experts to give you an inside look into what and how it's like training with them.

From militaristic training in full kit to civilian concealed carry techniques to combatives training, we'll be filming everything and sharing the experience with you!

My private training sessions tend to run very long, so it is very difficult condensing a full day's worth of training into a 20-25 minute video. As a result, these episodes are meant to show only highlights instead of serving as complete video lessons.

As you watch this and future episodes, you will notice that every instructor will have slightly different techniques and/or approaches, but you'll notice that despite these differences, the principles are the same.

It is more important to understand the principles and concepts behind their instruction, rather than individual techniques.

Intro to “The Journey”

If you haven't already watched it, first check out the intro to “The Journey” to learn why we started it and where we are going with the video series.

Watch Episode #2

In Episode #1, I trained with Coch and where he reviewed the basics of combat pistol. In Episode #2, Coch introduces the carbine laying a foundation for future training.

If you haven't watched Episode #1, you can watch it here!

Episode #2 is ideal for beginners who have little to no experience with carbines or anyone who is curious to learn how Coch teaches the basics of combat carbine.

We'd Love Your Feedback!

Like Episode #1, we hope you find Episode #2 entertaining and educational.

We filmed and edited Episode #2 a while ago, and since then, we've made improvements for future episodes. However, based on Episode #2, we'd love to hear your feedback so we can make sure you get great value out of future videos from “The Journey.”

Please do me a favor and leave your feedback in the comments section below, and we'll make sure to take everything into consideration!

Glad I found your site. Very informative and helpful. I especially like how every trainer breaks everything done in its simplest form and builds on the concepts. I also like how the trainers are not full of themselves and actually take the time to instruct the individuals that are here to learn. This is a website and forum worth watching and going back to time and time again. I also appreciate how the instructors answer the questions in the forums. So kudos to all of you and thank you for putting together such an informative site for all citizens of every skill level to watch

Thanks, Pete! Your comment means a lot and is exactly what we like to hear. I’m glad you like the content–we’re just getting started!

And you’re absolutely right about our SMEs being great traininers. They are indeed professionals and we are grateful and honored to have them as part of the community.

Just because someone was in special forces, spec ops, swate or any other elite unite does not make them a good instructor. Our SMEs are both very experienced in their fields as well as outstanding trainers.

It is our goal to connect the public with vetted tactical experts, and everyone we feature on our site, truly deserves to be known and respected.

Again, thanks for the comment, and great to hear the content is helpful!

Great video especially for those that are not able to attend a live session. While it’s not the same, the video presents plenty of information to practice on your own or with a friend for observation purposes. Thanks so much for posting these and adding the link to Instagram.

Hello Myles I been following you for a while and I can’t say enough on how great this site is
I am totally a beginner and I am watching over and over this videos.
but I just wanted to ask if is not to much to ask to list the gear used in the videos like
    from the instructor
    name or brand of holster
    carbine or pistol
the belt to keep the Magazines
the chest (vest or chest protector)
your whole set up and the instructor is amazing!
I think with links to vendors will work great
    Thank you

or at least in this video since I Have to get a holster and trying to some more gear

I really enjoyed the way coach explained things I thought I knew really well but gave me good points of contact to reassure my hands are positioned correctly and positioning but stock to cheek. I look forward to more from tactilehive.com

SOMETIMES, THEY WANT MORE... You never know what a SOMETIMES, THEY WANT MORE...
You never know what a criminal is going to do.

This is a robbery at a jewelry store in Thailand. When it comes to property, it's generally a wise decision to give up your property rather than risk your life.

However, sometimes criminals do more than just take property. This is an unfortunate example. We just never really know what criminals plan to do.

The robber opens fire on the family at the counter for no reason, then shoots the employees. There really is nothing they could have done--they were caught off guard. It's difficult to watch and angers us, but things like this can and do happen.

Stay vigilant.

HOME INVASION This happened in Flagstaff, St. Jam HOME INVASION
This happened in Flagstaff, St. James (corrected). We do not have details other than that.

We’ve discussed the importance of being aware in transitional spaces. Let’s assume the robbery victim did glance around before entering his home and didn’t see anything alarming.

Some questions: Did he lock the door to his place? Did the robbers force themselves in even with a locked door? We aren’t sure as we don’t have the details.

When thinking about hardening one’s home against some kind of invasion like this, your door should be set up in a way to buy you some time. Yes, robbers might be able to force their way in even if the door is locked, but a reinforced door can help buy you some time to take the ‘next step’.

What is the ‘next step’? This is where having a plan for such a situation can help. If he heard robbers trying to knock down his door, perhaps part of the plan could have been to immediately run inside the house to an established choke points/safe spot where he could call 911. Maybe one’s home defense plan includes sending a guard dog down to do work, while one stays in their safe spot for the police to arrive.

There are endless options and the plan will depend on a lot of variables.

The point here is, we should be situationally aware in transitional spaces, but we should also have a plan in case someone tries to forcefully enter our homes.

AMBUSHED Here, we have security transporting cash- AMBUSHED
Here, we have security transporting cash--likely to a bank. They are ambushed with little to no time to process everything going on and react appropriately.

What do you feel could have been done differently to prevent this?

Some ideas:

1. When transporting money, depending on the rules of a particular country, security should be armed with their tools ready. Here, both security guards had their pistols holstered. We do not know where this happened, but in various parts of the world, it's not uncommon for armed security to have one or two members with rifles ready for situations like this, while other security members carry the cargo/cash.

2. Blind spots. If one's profession lends itself to attacks like this, it's a good idea to try and get a clear view of your surroundings. We can't see all the angles, but it looks like the van could have blocked the security guards' line of sight. If this is truly the case, they were behind the power curve in terms of situational awareness.

What else do you think they could have done?
