In Episode #4 of “The Journey,” I train with former Navy SEAL, professional competition shooter, and performance shooting coach, Fred Ruiz.
Fred is a qualified Naval Special Warfare Sniper and small unit tactics subject matter expert. In addition to teaching SEALs, he has taught private shooting and tactics courses nationally for civilians, law enforcement, and other military service members.
After the Navy, Fred got involved in executive protection. His experiences in corporate security inspired him to launch his own private firm called, Method Enterprises.
He also recently secured a property in San Antonio, Texas that will serve as a tactical training center. The company is called Untethered Resources Group (website to come).
Watch Episode #4
In Episode #4 of “The Journey”, Fred hones in on my pistol fundamentals as he teaches me performance shooting techniques to improve my shooting speed and accuracy, which also apply to shooting in defensive situations.
This was one of my favorite training sessions because Fred answered lingering questions I had about my shooting performance, and he gave me a deeper understanding and appreciation of the basics.
Episode #4 is great for all skill levels. Regardless of your experience, you'll likely learn something new.
The episode is longer than our usual twenty minutes, i.e. it's 45 minutes, but still, we simply can't include everything from the training session, so we did our best to pick key highlights.
Fred only scratched the surface during our training session, so I'm excited to train more with Fred in the near future. If you have the chance to train with him, I highly recommend you do!

Great video! It was good to hear two subjects discussed that are seldom talked about in videos:
1)Natural Point of Aim
2)Subconscious Shooting
Also, having been a student of Ron Avery’s, it was great seeing his grip technique (nutcracker & stiffening the wrist) being taught.
I also thought Fred had a very laid style of teaching that didn’t make it sound like I was listening to a lecture from a boring college professor spewing a bunch of big words. Very easy to understand.
Glad you liked the episode, Maurice! The video only scratches the surface!
Fred is indeed a great instructor, and I highly recommend learning from him. His experience in the teams and in sport are a great combination.
This is Anthony McGaugh, owner of Guardian Survival Tools, LLC. I’ve been a full-time firearms instructor for over 12 years, and have had the privilege of spending a large portion of my life traveling around the country and training at many of the top firearms academies, and under some of the top instructors, in the world. Fred Ruiz’s detailed breakdown and phenomenal descriptions of the advanced fundamentals/essentials here of not only HOW, but also WHY, each of these details is important, is the very best I’ve ever encountered. Truly exceptional. I’m excited to see that Fred is opening a training facility here in Texas, and I look forward to the opportunity to train with him at his new company, Untethered Resources Group.
Thanks for the comment, Anthony! Glad you liked the episode.
You’re absolutely correct. Fred explains the why behind everything. Like you, I’ve learned from many other instructors without an explanation or emphasis on the why.
Definitely check out Fred’s new training facility when it opens. It’s going to be great.
Awesome video sir! I definitely learned some new info and techniques from your video. I can’t wait to get to the range and practice live fire using it. Much appreciate your input sir!
Joe
Glad you liked it, Joe! Definitely a lot of great details to help hone in on the fundamentals of shooting.
OUTSTANDING!!!
I will be taking this to the range ASAP!
Thank You for sharing!
Glad you liked it, Paul!
As a Emergency Physician, Ive had the opportunity to learn and teach with top Civilian, EMS, LEO, and military instructors. . I’ve trained with “Mr. Blue” when he was an active duty SEAL, now as Fred Ruiz, I get to see the true depth of his knowledge and skill. Firearms Training is like Emergency Medicine, almost everyday I learning something to pass on to civilian, LEOs and SF. Mark Cochiolo, what a Super Star. He’s an obviously Incredible Teacher and I’m sure Fighter. These guys are the best of the best. My belief is to be an effective Tactical Emergency Instructor you need to be a strong Shooter and use good Tactics. With good Tactics you May not need your Weapon. With good Tactics and good Weapon Techniques you May not need Tactical Medicine.
Thanks for the comment, Daniel! Fred has a wealth of knowledge and experience, and I’m glad you had a chance to train with him in the past. The video is 45 minutes, but he kept dropping knowledge bombs for hours. I really enjoyed the session.
You’re right about, Coch. One of the few out there that I’ve met who is a great balance between being an awesome instructor/person and an overall badass!
Glad you’re enjoying the episodes! We have four being edited and many more in the pipeline! Speaking of Tactical Medicine, I will be attending TCCC training and we will be making that an episode of The Journey!
I thank you all again for the time you give us, special words this lesson…. we are responsible for every round that leaves our firearm. that is the most important thing to me and you all help. thank you.
Glad you liked the episode!
