“The Journey” Ep 5: Carbine Rifle Malfunctions with Former SWAT Team & Marine Sergeant Jason Redding

by Myles 5 Comments

Former SWAT Team and Marine Sergeant Jason Redding

In Episode #5 of “The Journey,” I train with Subject Matter Expert, Jason Redding. Jason is the Owner & Director of Training for Stealth Shooting.

Jason is a former Team Sergeant for a full-time SWAT Team with a large municipal police department and a veteran U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant who served as a Team Leader with the Military Police Special Reaction Teams.

He has over 25 years of honorable service with both the law enforcement and military communities.

Watch Episode #5

In Episode #5 of “The Journey”, I train with Jason for the first time.

We started out with Jason running me through pistol and carbine rifle drills to assess my skills and determine what areas we could work on during our session.

I hardly practice clearing rifle and carbine malfunctions, so we decided to focus our session on dealing with the various malfunctions one might encounter.

Common Carbine AR-15 Malfunctions

In Episode #5, we focus on the following common malfunctions:

  • Immediate Action a.k.a. Tap, Rack, Bang
  • Double Feed
  • Bolt Override

Episode #5 is perfect for anyone who doesn't know how to deal with carbine rifle malfunctions or anyone who doesn't practice them much.

Malfunctions occur in error of three classes.
    Class One: Failure to Feed
    Class Two: Failure to Extract
    Class Three: Failure to Eject
The remedy is usually the same.
Drop the mag. Briskly cycle the action at least three times. Engage a fresh mag and get back in the fight.

You’re carrying a pistol. Why not transition to what is working, end threat or suppress threat to buy your way to cover, them out rack/in rack to get rifle back in play?

The focus of the episode is dealing with malfunctions versus transitions.

Myles, excellent episode covering m-4 carbine malfunctions. In my opinion Jason explained and demonstrated how to recover from the different types of malfunctions and how to get the gun back fight couldn’t of been scripted any better. Great video!

Glad you liked the episode! Jason definitely knows his stuff and is a great guy. Nothing was scripted–all first takes!

SOMETIMES, THEY WANT MORE... You never know what a SOMETIMES, THEY WANT MORE...
You never know what a criminal is going to do.

This is a robbery at a jewelry store in Thailand. When it comes to property, it's generally a wise decision to give up your property rather than risk your life.

However, sometimes criminals do more than just take property. This is an unfortunate example. We just never really know what criminals plan to do.

The robber opens fire on the family at the counter for no reason, then shoots the employees. There really is nothing they could have done--they were caught off guard. It's difficult to watch and angers us, but things like this can and do happen.

Stay vigilant.

HOME INVASION This happened in Flagstaff, St. Jam HOME INVASION
This happened in Flagstaff, St. James (corrected). We do not have details other than that.

We’ve discussed the importance of being aware in transitional spaces. Let’s assume the robbery victim did glance around before entering his home and didn’t see anything alarming.

Some questions: Did he lock the door to his place? Did the robbers force themselves in even with a locked door? We aren’t sure as we don’t have the details.

When thinking about hardening one’s home against some kind of invasion like this, your door should be set up in a way to buy you some time. Yes, robbers might be able to force their way in even if the door is locked, but a reinforced door can help buy you some time to take the ‘next step’.

What is the ‘next step’? This is where having a plan for such a situation can help. If he heard robbers trying to knock down his door, perhaps part of the plan could have been to immediately run inside the house to an established choke points/safe spot where he could call 911. Maybe one’s home defense plan includes sending a guard dog down to do work, while one stays in their safe spot for the police to arrive.

There are endless options and the plan will depend on a lot of variables.

The point here is, we should be situationally aware in transitional spaces, but we should also have a plan in case someone tries to forcefully enter our homes.

AMBUSHED Here, we have security transporting cash- AMBUSHED
Here, we have security transporting cash--likely to a bank. They are ambushed with little to no time to process everything going on and react appropriately.

What do you feel could have been done differently to prevent this?

Some ideas:

1. When transporting money, depending on the rules of a particular country, security should be armed with their tools ready. Here, both security guards had their pistols holstered. We do not know where this happened, but in various parts of the world, it's not uncommon for armed security to have one or two members with rifles ready for situations like this, while other security members carry the cargo/cash.

2. Blind spots. If one's profession lends itself to attacks like this, it's a good idea to try and get a clear view of your surroundings. We can't see all the angles, but it looks like the van could have blocked the security guards' line of sight. If this is truly the case, they were behind the power curve in terms of situational awareness.

What else do you think they could have done?
