REACTIONARY GAP Anyone who understands fighting we REACTIONARY GAP
Anyone who understands fighting well understands the reactionary gap.

For those unfamiliar, it refers to the minimum amount of space needed to ensure that you can properly react to a threat.

Here's a real-life example--something you have likely seen before, for instance at bars/clubs or during high school or college fights.

You may have heard the saying, "be first" or "hit first." The saying is very true in these situations.

Real fighters know never to let anyone get this close, or if they want to 'sucker punch' someone, they use tactics to close the reactionary gap, then strike.

Once someone has closed the reactionary gap, the first to hit, usually wins...

If you find someone in your reactionary gap, do one of two things:

1. Create distance immediately, and keep the distance.

2. If you cannot keep the distance, know that if something happens, and you're not first, you are likely going to get hit--and hopefully it isn't a hit that disables you. If you have no way to deescalate, in the great words of Cobra Kai's (now Eagle Fang Karate's) Johnny Lawrence, "Strike First. Strike Hard. No Mercy."
